What is ADVX?
|
|
The goal of the Advanced Extranet Server project is to create an extensible
open source web server based on Apache. Using a fully modularized approach,
system administrators can create an intranet/extranet with only the
functionality they need, or with all the flexibility to accomodate the needs
of different departments within an organization.
For an overview of the features, click on the "About" link in the main menu.
Or, read our WhitePaper to know all the differences
between ADVX and the standard Apache.

How to compile php for Oracle
Posted by jmdault on Monday, March 24 2003 @ 06:46
|
A lot of people asked me how to compile php for Oracle.
Good
news is you *don't* have to recompile the whole PHP just to add oracle
support. You just need php-devel and the Oracle Client Interface.

South-Pacific ccTLD .ki registry runs ADVX
Posted by jmdault on Thursday, March 13 2003 @ 10:59
|
The government of Kiribati (Pacific Islands) has given the technical
management of the country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) .ki to Telecom
Services Kiribati Limited (TSKL), the sole ISP for Kiribati.
In turn, TSKL has chosen to run the ccTLD .ki registry using only open-source systems.
The
registry runs with PostgreSQL as a backend database, and is accessible
via the Web through Apache and an interface developed with PHP.
All the DNS records are served with bind, and the whole system is running on Mandrake Linux.

"Powered By" buttons
Posted by jmdault on Friday, February 21 2003 @ 11:35
|
A lot of people want to put "Powered-By" buttons on their web site, to show that they're using Open-Source software.
Unfortunately, most sites have old buttons that often not match in style.
Here are a bunch of new logos, all using the Apache model.

Security fix: PHP 4.3.1
Posted by jmdault on Tuesday, February 18 2003 @ 14:17
|
The PHP Group has learned of a serious security vulnerability in the CGI SAPI of PHP version 4.3.0.
PHP
contains code for preventing direct access to the CGI binary with
configure option "--enable-force-cgi-redirect" and php.ini option
"cgi.force_redirect". In PHP 4.3.0 there is a bug which renders these
options useless.
Get the new files in the Download section.

PHP 4.3.0 in ADVX
Posted by jmdault on Tuesday, January 14 2003 @ 13:14
|
After weeks of compiling, patching and experimenting, PHP 4.3.0 support is now included in ADVX!
According to rpmfind.net, Mandrake is the first Linux Distribution that includes this new version of PHP.
You can download the packages, built for Apache 1.3.27, in the Download section. These binaries are built for Mandrake 9.0. Files for Apache 2.0 are also available on the Mandrake Cooker mirrors.
Many thanks to Oden of Deserve-It Networks for his patches and debugging!

Frontpage support for Apache 2.0
Posted by jmdault on Tuesday, November 26 2002 @ 08:58
|
At last, support for FrontPage Extensions under Apache 2.0 has started!
I had a talk today with Bill Porcaro, from RTR software, the company that Microsoft contracted to port Frontpage to Linux and other Unices.
The new extensions are still in beta stage, but you can already download them.
I
am trying to work an agreement where the mod_frontpage module would be
distributed with Mandrake, while the proprietary, binary-only part would
still be distributed from RTR, except in RPM format.
Of course, there are some licensing issues to be resolved, but we should have more news in the following weeks.

More than 100.000 Advanced Extranet servers!
Posted by jmdault on Friday, November 08 2002 @ 11:18
|
Deno has posted a nice article on the Mandrake Forum.
I'll
let you read the article, but I'll summarize it by saying that while
the overall number of web servers on the internet is declining, between
October 2001 and October 2002, number of Advanced Extranet servers grew
by 140%! Click on the "Full Story" link for the graphics and a CSV file you can open in your favorite spreadsheet.

ADVX project update
Posted by jmdault on Friday, November 08 2002 @ 03:26
|
Since a couple of people asked, I figured I might post an update on the status of the project...
1) The project is not stalled. Au contraire,
my bosses just relieved me of all my other functions, such as back-end
processing of the MandrakeStore, MandrakePartner, and other
non-development tasks. This will give me much more time to work on ADVX.
The
ADVX project is in re-organization. Right now, development is scattered
in multiple places, such as Cooker for main development, MandrakeSecure
for security updates, PLF for Java, etc.
Furthermore, there are
many branches: the 1.3 tree for 9.0, the 1.3 tree for Cooker, the 2.0
tree for the 9.0, the 2.0 tree for Cooker, and Oden's 2.0 modules tree.
We need a central repository for these packages.
My task (and
everyone's invited to join!), is to centralize all development on
ADVX.org. This should be completed in the following weeks.
2)
Java support: we need more people! I originally put the Java packages so
people can test them and give me their feedback. Unfortunately, very
few people were interested, and as such, not much work has been done in
this area. We need more people testing, reporting bugs, making
suggestions, and *using* the stuff.
3) Support and Community: some lists are available at: http://www.advx.org/lists.php, and it's starting to roll. There is no web archive of forums yet, but it's planned.
